The first origins of Swiss watchmaking
The luxury watch brand JEANRICHARD has inherited the legacy of Daniel Jeanrichard (1665-1741), a legendary figure in Swiss watchmaking, now universally considered to be the "founder of the watchmaking industry in the canton of Neuchâtel" in the late 17th century. The influence of this pioneering spirit is still felt today.
Born in 1665 in the hamlet of Les Bressels, between the villages of La Chaux-de-Fonds and Le Locle in the Swiss Jura, Daniel Jeanrichard had a curious and inventive mind. One day, when he was still young and had no experience of watchmaking, he was given an English watch that no longer worked. While repairing it, he carefully studied the mechanism and decided to make one just like it himself. Thus it was that in 1681 he created his first watch – the very first ever made in the region –, before going on to establish his own watchmaking workshop. The JEANRICHARD Museum in La Chaux-de-Fonds still conserves several of his most outstanding watches, including the "Daniel" watch (1710), a technical and aesthetic masterpiece with a calendar aperture.
Ahead of his time
Watchmakers also owe to Daniel Jeanrichard the invention of various machines and tools linked to the production of timepieces.
Keen to ensure the transmission of this expertise, he also played an important role in the establishment of a system of apprenticeship. He is thus the epitome of an entrepreneur who follows his passion and does not hesitate to take all the risks required to build for the future. Daniel Jeanrichard opened up new horizons, and his descendants carried on his work. This visionary, pioneering spirit is still at the heart of the JEANRICHARD brand today.
A new impetus
In 2012, the JEANRICHARD brand of Swiss watches was relaunched, with the support of the Kering Group.
The aim was to give it a new impetus, to re-dynamise it and to modernise it, while remaining faithful to the values of its founder. In this way new collections have been created, designed for all those who turn each day, each hour and each instant into a new adventure. For all those men and women who wish to live their lives to the full. For innovative and pioneering spirits. For the Daniel Jeanrichards of today.
